Thursday

Morning departure with coffee stop enroute to Avebury Manor.

The television series The Manor Reborn, which aired in December 2011, showed how nine of Avebury Manor's rooms and part of the garden were redecorated and redesigned in five different styles: Tudor, Queen Anne, Georgian, Victorian and 20th century. This imaginative process drew on the team's expertise, historical research and inventories from other houses of the selected periods to help recreate inspirational interiors for the rooms. One of the most unique things about Avebury Manor is that you are not kept away with barriers, you are encouraged to sit on the furniture, lie on the beds and play snooker in the Billiard Room.  The only exception being the Chinese hand painted wallpaper in the Georgian Dining Room which will damage if touched.

Also on site is  the Alexander Keiller  museum was opened in 1938 by Alexander Keiller and is now divided into two separate galleries; the Stables Gallery which has a wonderful display of the archaeological finds from the area and the Barn Gallery which has interactive displays and a children's area.

Outside you have  fascinating history dating back over 4,000  years - Avebury is a World Heritage Site with its Stone Circles which I prefer to Stonehenge.

After a good breakfast we head for The Courts Gardens via Corsham.  The Courts is a garden we have visited a few times and is good to see at different times of the year + it has a very nice small tearooms.

After we visit Great Chalfield Manor which is close by.  A  beautiful medieval manor house with seven acres of gardens.  The Manor is often used for film & television and recently featured in Wolf Hall  as Thomas Cromwells home.  We will have a guided tour of the house, then a chance to wander around the delightful gardens before finishing with a cup of tea & cake. (The house is closed today to the public)
