Morning departure with coffee/comfort stop enroute to Alresford & Mid Hants Railway also known as the Watercress Line where besides a return trip on a heritage train Alresford to Alton (hopefully a steam train) we have arranged for a talk on the Watercress Line before our train journey.
Our hotel for the night is the Q hotel Norton Park @ Sutton Scotney
Chance to use leisure facilities before dinner.
Saturday
Today we visit Arundel Castle one of the longest inhabited country houses in
England. Many of the original features such as the crenellated Norman
keep, gatehouse and barbican and the lower part of Bevis Tower survive.
Between the 1870s and 1890s the house was almost completely rebuilt and
the magnificent architecture in Gothic style is considered to be one of
the great works of Victorian England.
Enjoy the grandeur of the finely preserved interior with its
fascinating furniture, tapestries and rare collection of paintings by
renowned artists including Van Dyck, Gainsborough and Canaletto.
The gardens include a rose garden, herbaceous borders, stumpery, glasshouses, cut flower garden & organic kitchen garden.
Today there is also a Medieval Tournament where The Knights, Squires, and Men-at-Arms of Raven Tor Living History
Group will meet in a Medieval Foot Tournament on the upper lawns of
Arundel Castle.
With competitions using a variety of weapons, the free-style fighting
of the combatants will be the nearest reproduction of tournament combat
seen outside of the 15th century.
With Story Teller, falconry display, have-a-go-archery and a tented
encampment of crafts and displays, there is plenty to see and experience.
