3 NATIONAL TRUST
DYRHAM PARK, LACOCK & GREAT CHALFIELD MANOR
Thursday 10th/Friday 11th September 2026
Thursday
We make our way to Dyrham Park, on the outskirts of Bath.
The house is fine example of baroque architecture, and was created by colonial administrator William Blathwayt in the late 17th century. The 270-acre ancient rolling parkland is home to a vast array of trees & a herd of fallow deer.
The gardens have formal borders, ponds, orchard and wooded terraces.
Dyrham is often used for filming, including Poldark.
Friday
After breakfast we will make our way to Lacock, the village is a quintessential English village, little changed in 200 years with timber framed houses & shops, and often used for filming. The House is a country house with monastic roots and original medieval cloister and once home to William Henry Fox Talbot, photographic pioneer. Visit the Fox Talbot Museum which explores the history of photography, and Lacock's role within it, and hosts changing photography exhibitions. Lacock is also regulary used for filming including Downton Abbey, Pride & Prejudice, Cranford etc.
In the afternoon we visit Great Chalfield Manor, again often used for filming, including Poldark & Wolf Hall. The medieval manor house is still lived in by the donor family & a much-loved family home and an important example of Edwardian period charm it was restored in the early 20th century. The gardens are described as being romantic arts & crafts. You are welcome to visit the church which is not NT and they are grateful for donation.
