GARDENS & CASTLE IN OXFORDSHIRE
Saturday 8th/Sunday 9th June 2019
Morning departure with coffee stop enroute to Waterperry Gardens
Made famous by Beatrix Havergal who established her School of Horticulture for Ladies from 1932 to 1971, it's now home to 8 acres of beautifully landscaped ornamental gardens.
After we make our way to Marriott Northampton
for our nights stay with dinner.
After a good breakfast our first visit today will be a private visit & guided tour at Broughton Castle near Banbury. A moated and fortified manor house. Set in parkland and built of the rich local Hornton ironstone. The core of the house was built in 1306 and the gatehouse in the early fifteenth century, but most of what you will see today dates from the 1550’s. It was a centre of opposition to Charles I and was besieged and damaged after the Battle of Edgehill in 1642. Broughton Castle is home to the 21st Lord and Lady Saye & Sele, whose family name is Fiennes. The ownership of the Castle has remained in the same family since 1447.
This afternoon it's the gardens of Thenford, just outside Banbury home to Lord & Lady Heseltine who are opening their gardens today for selected groups for charity. These gardens have everything, the famous arboretum
covers some 70 acres in which are over 3,500 different types of trees & shurbs. There are extensive ponds & lakes, walled garden, rills, sculpture garden & much more.
Please note the terrain can be quite rough, this is a private garden & not particularly suitable for the disabled.
