RICHARDS NT + 2025

Tuesday 17th/Friday 20th June 2025

Tuesday

Morning departure with coffee/comfort stop before our first National Trust visit to Hinton Ampner,  a lavish passion project largely created by the last owner, Ralph Dutton, when he rebuilt the house after a devastating fire in 1960. In the garden lawns lead  down avenues of sculptured topiary, borders of roses and views across the South Downs.

Wednesday

We catch the hovercraft from Southsea to Ryde for you to spend the day on the Isle of Wight. Bus passes are accepted so you might like to catch a bus around the island, in summer there are coastal open top buses or perhaps catch the bus to Osborne House (English Heritage) or various other places such as The Needles you decide.

Thursday

Two NT today, firstly Woolbeding Gardens.

The 26-acre garden. The garden rooms, each with a carefully chosen colour theme, from deep reds to pastel pinks. Discover the array of modern planting, set against the formal backdrop of the walled garden, visit the winding paths of the new Silk Route garden, admiring plants from the ancient trading route, or walk across the meadow to discover the Long Walk, a pleasure garden with summer houses, waterfalls and a river-god grotto. The house is a private residence and the gardens are only open  2 days a week for part of the year.

Petworth House

The market town of Petworth is  just outside the grounds of the house. The estate spanning 900 years of history and passing through just one family.  Not your average country home with the family line remaining unbroken and descendants still living at Petworth. Petworth was transformed in 17C into a grand mansion  and displays one of the finest art collections in the National Trust.

Friday

We make our way home but with visit first to NT Mottisfont known for its world famous old fashioned rose collection.  We are hoping we will see it at its best.  The house has a permanent display of 20C art & Rex Whistler’s extraordinary drawing room. The gallery houses different exhibitions

throughout the year
