A Drink or Two & Three National Trust  -  Thursday 28th/Friday 29th September 2017

Morning departure with coffee stop enroute to Chiltern Valley.

At Waddesdon Christmas Market quite a few tried samples from Chiltern Valley Winery and were suitably impressed so we decided to visit them at their Vinery/Brewery just outside Henley on Thames to sample more of their range of wines, ales & liqueurs. They hold the prestigious 'By Appointment to Her Majesty The Queen' so if its good enough for her I am sure it will be for us. We start with a ‘behind the scenes’ tour around the Winery Brewery and Liqueur production facilities. As well as a full explanation of the grape pressing machinery that is used during the harvest. The bottling, labelling and capsulation machinery is later seen and explained. Last but no means least the tour is completed with a tutored 30-40 minute tasting of a generous selection of Wines Ales & Liqueurs. Old Luxtons Ales are known as 'the Champagne of real ales' while the award winning wines will delight the eye and excite the palate. The Old Luxton liqueurs use the highest quality fruit to make their well known liqueurs like Blood Orange & Wild Strawberry. The reason why we visiting here today instead of tomorrow is that today you won't be driving home and can fully enjoy the tasting experience!

As the houses at Greys Court and Nuffield Place don't open until 13.00 we are visiting one of our garden favourites in the morning at Cliveden.

The gardens at Cliveden capture the grandeur of a bygone age. Formerly home of the Astor family, Cliveden has glorious gardens overlooking the Thames. The house now a private hotel is not open.

Set in the rolling hills of the Chilterns, Greys Court is a picturesque Tudor manor house surrounded by layers of history and has only been inhabited by five families in its long history. The mansion today is a patchwork of styles that hint at the various fortunes and tastes of the occupants.

Finally just 5 miles away is Nuffield Place, the home of William Morris, founder of Morris Motors and a great philanthropist and benefactor. Despite his great wealth, William Morris later Lord Nuffield lived in the pleasant but unostentatious home. The house and garden typify early 20th-centuary taste and thrift & reveal the home life of a couple who with a fortune behind them still enjoyed the simpler things in life.
